<h3>Fewer People, More Rules: Supply-Chain Compliance Under Pressure</h3>"What's happening in the world?" you might ask, and a tsunami of answers and thoughts floods the shores of your mind. And that happens if you only ask the question with regard to a single strand of compliance, not to mention everything else that you may have to consider, fret about, and ultimately deal with as part of what you thought your job was about and what your bosses know it is about...and what you all agree it is about.&nbsp;Across Europe, many companies are looking to trim headcount. There is nothing new about that; we see it as a repeating circular event in all manner of business. The thing is, though, that we never learn that cutting your compliance team is not always, and should not always be, the first option. I must admit, for many years, it was a boon for those who sold compliance software. We were able to reassure the ever-decreasing compliance teams that we could stick our software thumbs into the ever-widening cracks of their compliance expectations and stop the flow of anticipated fines and wrist-slaps from the regulator, just like the fabled boy on the Dutch dike. I mean, it was good for business, but was it good for...well, business?&nbsp;Cutting your regulatory team in times of financial challenge is akin to cutting your ropes while climbing Everest. It simply should not be done. A Sherpa cutting ropes? Well, you would soon be skidding as fast as your backside would allow down the slope and back to safety while the cries of "It will be fine, don't worry!" ring in your frozen ears. Compliance is the set of ropes and the mountain, the snow, the rain, the wind, the sub-zero temperatures, and grumpy colleagues; well, they are all the working parts of the product you make and the company that makes the product. Not to put too fine a point on it, you kinda need the ropes.&nbsp;So, what is driving the push to smaller teams that bear larger obligations, or, more clearly, what is moving companies' risk from managed to exposed? Quite a few things need to be managed while trying to balance the concerns of approachable compliance.<ul><li>Cost pressure and slower growth: higher financing costs and squeezed margins result in stalled hiring, shared roles or "additional role ownership" (more work, same pay!)</li><li>Regulatory surge: You have heard me bleat about this in the past, but I am not sure the sheepdogs are listening. More markets, more regulations. If you seek to sell your product in new markets, you will face more regulations. Currently, clients are raising flags about expanding disclosure and traceability requirements, what direction those obligations are being pushed, and who is responsible for them within the organisation.</li><li>Tool sprawl and data silos: Every now and again, a new business term is coined, and I do like this one, "tool sprawl." Too many systems covering too many related tasks and coexisting without connection or consideration.</li><li>&nbsp;Talent Churn: Off-boarding (a terrible expression from HR language creators...two steps short of waterboarding) takes away company knowledge with an expectation that it will still, somehow, be there when it is needed.&nbsp;</li><li>Geopolitics and logistic friction: Sanctions, export controls, tariffs, and route-disruptive events make supply-chain engagement a moving target, not one you wish to shoot (depending on the department you work for), just one you would like to tie down.&nbsp;</li></ul> Five balls to juggle before even considering the impact of dropping one, two, or all of them. So, when you do drop one, and you will, what is the impact of that slip on your business? Again, a manageable snafu if you were a large organisation with the people and the funds to manage issues when they arise unexpectedly. If you are an SME, probably a different outcome:<ul><li>Compliance debt: Tot up your compliance receipts, and you will see overdue supplier questionnaires, partial data, audit slippage, and more.</li><li>Tender risk: the inability to evidence due diligence knocks you out of consideration even before pricing can be discussed.</li><li>Cost creep: When you encounter processes that are not standardised across your business, you will find new budgets...hard to find.&nbsp;</li><li>Single Point of Failure: A single, standardised process is not an SPoF; having one person who understands it and manages it is.&nbsp;</li></ul> Those four points are just the start; it is not an exhaustive list once you consider capacity, financial, operational, and relationship strains that will inevitably appear, especially in smaller companies.&nbsp;What are the fixes, if any, that can help you if you hit these barriers? Well, there are many small fixes that can be implemented before you consider gently knocking on your frazzled CFO's office door, cap in hand, seeking more budget.&nbsp;1. Prioritise by risk and revenue: Map obligations to where the revenue and regulatory exposure actually sit, often by product line and country. Then, try to focus on the 20% of suppliers that cover 80% of spending, emissions, and content first.&nbsp; 2. One ask, many uses: Issue one harmonised questionnaire aligned to your core frameworks, such as due diligence questions, restricted substances, and origin/HS codes for CBAM, to cut duplication, improve data quality, and strengthen regulatory reporting. 3. Assemble the essentials: Give yourself space, a defined space though, to get the ducks in order and pull the pigeons out of the line. You know the ducks: Code of Conduct, Human Rights and Environmental Policies, Supplier Due-Diligence SOP, Sanctions/Export-Control Check Steps, Incident Log, and Corrective-Action Templates. Perfection is a fool's target; get the process right, and that will help with tenders and audits.&nbsp; 4. Small steps before leaping: Work on the small e-wins before jumping to large-scale solutions. Shared mailboxes, use Power Query or simple low-code flows to clean vendor data and match IDs. Small, smart automation builds confidence (and evidence) for bigger investment later.&nbsp; 5. Let the shovel do the work: An old builder used to say that to me during my summer building jobs, and it applies here too, to contracts. Add data-provision clauses, origin declarations, warranties on restricted substances, and right-to-audit to the Ts&amp;Cs. The contract is the shovel! 6. Sprints versus long-distance webinars: Short, snappy, and informative notifications for buyers and planners on "How to read a supplier declaration," "3 red flags in an SDS," or "When to escalate." Short and effective beats long and ponderous.&nbsp; 7. Consider governance that fits the headcount:Nothing moves faster than a governance committee...once the fifth sub-approval has been signed off by the steering group. Keep it small and reasonable for small and medium businesses. Engage the team in a monthly Risk Huddle (30 mins), and cover the top nonconformities, blocked tenders, and corrective actions. On a quarterly basis, produce a board note that includes a heat map, the fines you've avoided, the percentage of suppliers covered, and the cost-to-comply trend.&nbsp; There is more to come on this subject, and it will follow in the next post, but for now, one key thing I would always recommend a client to do is to speak with your peers. There is a wealth of information out there that people are so willing to share over a coffee or a beer. People do like to help!

All measurable. All easy to present at the Monday morning meetings. But here’s a consideration: Metrics are lagging indicators, a reflection of the results of past actions and events. All they can tell you is what happened. Behaviour, well, that is the one that is going to tell you what is happening in the future.&nbsp;What should salespeople really be thinking about? 1. Quality of Conversation Not just “Did I make the call?” but: “Did I ask something that made them stop and think?” What is an example of this? How about asking, “Even if they are doing almost everything right, what is the one problem your supplier does not solve?”What does this question show? Well, quite a lot if you examine it and how it is delivered:1. A polite doff of the cap to your opposition. You acknowledge them sportingly.2. The question causes reflection.3. You have shown that you know that there is complexity involved.4. Creates space for an honest answer as you have acknowledged the opposition’s ability without criticising them.5. Opens the door to your differentiator. Did you learn something about their context, their pressure, their politics?2. Progress of Trust “Did I earn the right to ask a harder question next time?” Metrics can’t measure trust, but trust moves deals forward.3. Buyer Energy Is the buyer getting more engaged, or withdrawing politely? (Veterans know the danger of “great meetings” that never call back.) Actually, let's come back to great meetings in another post!4. Personal Discipline Did I prep properly, follow up quickly, and handle rejection professionally? These are not logged in the CRM, but they define consistency.5. Pattern Recognition Is there a real reason deals stall at proposal? Is there a pattern to the kind of champions who get us in the door? Metrics don’t surface this; people do.Final Thought Metrics tell you where you’ve been. Behavioural intelligence tells you where you’re going. Smart salespeople don’t ignore metrics; they just know they’re the scoreboard, not the game.

You have endured the flights, expended the limit of the pidgin version of the language of your host country, listened to the stories at the hotel bar, and wished to forget 90% of them and now you are in your car, slipping out of the airport car park with only a few miles between you and the end of another sales trip. You can call it a business trip to your friends and colleagues, but it was a sales trip. You were selling the minute you sat into your plane seat and the John Candy-like character beside you removed his shoes, socks and any hope of a peaceful flight. And what is the most important thing to bring back from a sales trip that has cost your company money? Simple, just more money. Bringing back money is not always going to happen on the trips but there is a constant out there that you can bring back. It is a constant that makes the difference between a good trip and a great trip. That constant is field intelligence. The Cost of Travel, The Value of IntelSo, let’s move thoughts of money, be it revenue for the company or commission for the sales guy, out of the equation in the context of this discussion. It is a given that everyone wants to earn. But, to enhance the earning capabilities of the salesperson and the company, they must be able to bring home those intelligence titbits that will help not just the sale but also the development of the product, the marketing team, the strategies of the leadership function, and the company as a whole.This is field intelligence: the real-time, on-the-ground insights that are gleaned from every meeting and client interaction over the duration of the business trip. It differs from raw data, usage data and such information in that it is context-rich, timely, and drawn from human moments. Let me expand on that by going back to that keyword "constant" and why we look for the baseline, that even keel ploughing through the waves of intel out there waiting to be harnessed. The Four Constants of Field IntelligenceWhen intelligence is being analysed, there are four constants to be kept in mind. Those are:&nbsp;I. Objective: What are you really trying to learn?&nbsp;II. Evaluation: Can you trust what you are hearing?&nbsp;III. Chronology: Is it timely and still relevant?&nbsp;IV. Cui Bono: Who benefits from what you are being told?Why is this so? There is no shortage of intelligence applicable to crime, terrorism, or sales. The secret to success is knowing what is good and what no longer qualifies as intelligence. That begins with understanding the objective. If you do not start with the right questions, you risk bringing back noise. What is noise? Noise in sales is opinions, feature requests, gossip about competitors, and my favorite...aspirations. To dampen the noise, align yourself with the task at hand and be able to answer the one Objective question:What decision does my team need to make right now? That simple question, before you go to the airport, will guide you as to what to listen for, how to frame your questions, and how to extricate the information you need. What Salespeople Forget (and Why it Matters)Next comes evaluation. We have all been there when asked why we have forecast a number with little to back it up in the CRM system. “They loved the demo,” “They are switching vendors next quarter,” and “They love our pricing!” All of this is what you want to hear, but it is only relevant if it can be absorbed and then acted on with high confidence. Take the comments and musings from a senior stakeholder versus the speculation of an eager junior staff member. What do you go for? 9 out of 10 times you go with the senior, right? Well, let’s say yes for now and get into it another day as to why you have to listen and take note of what the junior is saying. Either way, if you move from the meeting to lunch, then a stroll around the new building, stop for a coffee, see the labs or the factory floor…and on and on, before you know it, three hours have passed and you have not recorded the knowledge gained from the meeting, and that knowledge is now fermenting in the darkened corners of the mind of a salesperson. And we all know what happens in those dark corners. The hint of positivity towards the product (and therefore the sale) has its own little Big Bang when forecasting is required. Your memory of an event is not the same after three hours. Our memories are fragile, vulnerable to distortion and suggestion and can be infected by bias (yes, sales folk can be biased towards their product and processes. Who knew!) To counter these issues, challenge everything and grade your results. Macbeth, Motive &amp; MemoryNow, let’s bring that most unfortunate salesman from Scotland into the discussion. When he mused “If it were done when ’tis done, then ’twere well It were done quickly” Macbeth was mulling over the timing of killing his King. For sales, the “if” and the “when” inform the importance of chronology in the consideration of intelligence. Capturing what was said is key, whether that intel is true, and when it became true, is the comforting click of the lock opening. Old intel is no intel so follow up with questions that will help clarify the timelines – “When did you first notice that?” and follow on gently with others such as “Has anything changed since?” And yes, I know Macbeth was not a salesman per se, but he was trying to sell himself as King! From Recorder to AnalystFinally, we move to point four, and back to Latin: Cui Bono, who benefits from this? Dial the expectation down from “It is nothing personal, just business” to a more balanced idea that every comment has a motive. Understanding what that motive is will guide you to the answers you need. Is that left-field feature request about usability or internal politics? Is the client's urgency real or a negotiating pressure play? The threat to move to another competitor is it genuine, or are you missing a deeper issue at play? Salespeople who think in terms of motive go from being recorders to analysts and generate a timely and actionable advantage. Once you know who benefits, you know the questions to ask, how to ask them, and what to watch for, but I think my fingerprints are starting to fade from all this typing, so I ought to leave those tips to another day. I shall, however, leave you with the following consideration. In high-stakes conversations, keep in mind the intelligence that you gather rarely stands in isolation. You are looking for context, baseline behaviour and clusters, to name a few. The key one I used to look for is summed up in the following Limerick – In interviews, sharp minds may roam,But truth sometimes shifts close to homeIf they squirm in their seat,It’s a sign, not so neat,That the answer might not stand alone.
